Tikveš was founded in December 1930 and is one of the oldest football clubs in Macedonia.
The club made the first notable achievements in the 1950s, during that period the Macedonian Republic League was divided into three divisions (Štip, Bitola, Skopje), at the end of the seasons the winners of each division played in the play-off finals to decide the Macedonian Champion, Tikveš won the Štip Division in 1952 and 1956/57, but on both occasions lost in the play-off finals.
The most successful period in the club's history came in the 1970s, Tikveš led by the renowned goalscorer Angel Kimov won the Macedonian Republic League twice (1971/72; 1977/78) and played in the Yugoslav Second League several seasons.
Following the Macedonian independence in 1991 Tikveš played in the Macedonian First League, but despite a wealth of home grown talent and some well known signings Tikveš never broke into the top four and therefore failed to quialify for European competition. With the arrival of the new century came the darkest days in the club's existence, in season 2000/01 Tikveš were for the very first time relegated from the Macedonian First League, they made an immediate return the following season, but after the second relegation in 2003/04 the club fell into serious financial difficulties and shortly afterwards went into bankruptcy. Eventually the club was rejuvenated under the name of GFK Tikveš and since then there have been some more positive signs. In the 2010/11 season Tikveš narrowly missed the chance to be promoted to the Macedonian First League by losing in the play-off final.

The most hardcore supporters of Tikveš are known as Lozari (Winegrowers) (Macedonian: Лозари ), they were formed in 1991. Lozari traditionally occupy the East Stand at the stadium. The average attendance in Kavadarci has always been very good for Macedonian standards.
An annual International Memorial Tournament has been held in Kavadarci since 1993 in honour and memory of Tikveš's former player and president Vuko Karov. The tournament is always played in February and is considered by many to be the most prestigious friendly tournament in Macedonia.
